Sunday January 9. 1881. Awoke much depressed and longing for dear Gertrude. I could not help giving way to tears thinking of her and have thought of her all day. It has snowed and tonight is raining. I stopped at the club a little while this evening. Mr. Ford was there and I talked with him. Asked about his son whom I met a year ago and he told me he was dead. Poor man the tears came in his eyes as he said it. His wife died fifteen years ago. He had told me he awoke early and thought of all sorrowful things. "And there" said he "are the thoughts that come to one in the night" as he turned and walked away. Poor man. I know what he suffers. Coming here I met a woman going through the rain enveloped in a water proof cloak and as I passed her I heard her sob. Another wretched heart. I came to my room before dinner and wrote a little to Booth, a very doleful one I fear. Tomorrow I am going up to Pokeepsie.

Monday 10. Went to Pokeepsie by 11 o clock train. It was raining and the streets were in as bad a condition as I have ever seen them. Not feeling happy, I took a seat in the drawing room car to be alone. The ride up was very interesting for the variety of wintry effects. Up in the Highland the trees were covered with ice. The ride and the interest in the landscape were a real refreshment. Major Wilkinson met me at the Station and we went directly to the house. About 6 Mary Gifford and Weir and his wife arrived, where we had dinner and a delightful evening together with old and tired friends. I went
Tuesday 11
up to Rondout by the morning train. It was very cold. Rode over the river on the ice and Maurice met me on other side and drove me up home. After dinner He Sara, Nannie and I took a sleigh ride out to Leggs Mills It was very cold going against the North wind. The snow is two feet deep with a hard crust making it difficult to turn out.

Wednesday 12 Came down this morning by the noon train. Maurice drive me over the river. It was bright but very cold. The mercury was down to zero at one house last night. Mr. Grey sat beside me from [[?]]. We were in Europe together. It has not thawed in the streets today. I paid our taxes in Rondout yesterday. Calvert, Mary and I called on Mrs. Putnam and I walked all the way down from 60" St.
