Sunday 9 to find the train went no farther until Monday. Breakfasted at Bangor house. There they suggested to us to go and see the Superintendent of the road which we did and found a freight train was going to Mattawamkeag in half an hour and would wait for us to get our trunks. Hustled around and got the baggage and came to Mattawamkeag - arriving there at 1 o clk. Got dinner at hotel & arranged for train to Midway. Got the merchant to open his store and made some purchases and at 3 left for Midway where we arrived at 5 - cold and fine. No guides. Sent for Royal who came. William had not got my letter but they would be ready.

Monday 10" Royal came early and we made our purchases at Kimballs. Employed William Boynton to haul our stores to upper end of Cary. John Daisey came and we started in the birches at 11o clock, cold, cloudy & windy. Got our lunch at high landing. Forgot coffee & tea pots & John ran back after them. Reached Little Schoodic at 4 & camped for the night. Cold. froze ice half an inch thick.

Tuesday 11. Started at 8. We walked to Shad pond
