Tuesday Jan. 31. 1882. A wild snowstorm has been raging all day increasing in violence until tonight the wind is blowing and the snow falling as fast as it can. A fearful fire happened this morning burning up the Old [[strikethrough]] Times [[/strikethrough]] World building and many people have perished in the flames. I dined with Fred Sawyer and his wife but Fred had to go out after dinner. Had a nice long letter from Lucy giving me an account of a winter ride up to Star Valley. I wrote to her this afternoon. Painted a little picture of the Winter twilight I saw coming down from Dobbs Ferry Sunday evening but it is not very successful. I hope to improve it when I paint on it again. The charity ball occurs tonight.

Wednesday Feb. 1" 1882.
In the afternoon I began a Nevada picture from my study in Star Valley and am greatly interested in it. In the morning I went with Calvert to see Tildens house. The details of the camp in wood and stone are charming and I think Calvert has shown unusual ability in it. Then we went up to the Watercolor exhibition and I looked at the pictures in the north room. In the evening Mary, Calvert and I with Mrs. Putnam and Ruth dined at Mrs. Taylors and afterwards went to Mrs. Goddards party. We had a very pleasant time because we knew most of the people and the rooms were not crowded. Emma Brace was there but there were only a few young people.

Thursday 2. Attended Dr. Bellows funeral at his church at 9 o'clock as his remains are to be taken to Walpole N.H. The church was crowded with his friends and Mr. Colyer and Edward Everett Hale conducted the services which were very simple, Mr. Hale speaking happily of his honorable and useful life. I cannot help feeling his loss almost as a personal bereavement. Came to my room and have painted all day on my Nevada picture. Julia Dillon and Mrs. Beverly called. A letter from Major Wilkinson telling me of improvement in Mrs. Giffords condition. Attended a trustees meeting at the Century in which we considered the idea of the removal of the club uptown. All our plans are based upon a resolution not to increase the membership, not to accept donations and not to build an extravagant club house which will run us into debt.

Friday 3. I sent Emma Brace a present of a ring which I found out she meant to buy with her first earnings. Painted on my Nevada picture. Annie Norton & Mrs. Curtis called. Attended the artists dinner at the University place restaurant. The place is too close and I did not sleep well. Major Wilkinson called also Miss Teale.

Saturday 4. A snowstorm set in this morning and has been the severest of the winter. Went to the Water Color exhibition this morning
