Sunday Sept. 10 1882 A sober, shadowy day, cool in the morning and with a feeling of fall in the air. Read a charming letter of Wm. Winters in the Tribune descriptive of a visit to Stoke Poges church, the sentiment of September pervading it as it has this day. The cook should not leave on such a day as ours has, and upset the household arrangements again. I wrote to Eastman that I had been forced to give up the Maine woods this fall and to Royal Reed also. Wrote to Downing to get me certain stable fittings. Am going at the stable to finish it so that I can get out sketching as soon as possible. There are indications of a storm. Wrote to Louis Berier of Marbletown to ask if he would take Vaux and me to board toward the last of the month.

Monday 11. Engaged a carpenter to come Monday to work on the stable. Rained very hard nearly all day. Had Henry whitewash the stable ceiling, while Tom cleaned out the rubbish preparatory to cementing the floor. Dr. Howard Waldo came to attend a Homeopathic convention at the Tremper House Phoenicia tomorrow.

Tuesday 12. Drove to Rondout early to see about lumber and paint for the barn. A magnificent day with fine, rich atmosphere and a brisk north wind. Mixed the paint and began to paint the barn this afternoon while Tom chooses materials for the cement work. Am anxious to finish as soon as possible so as to go sketching. Would like to have been at work today. A letter from Wilmont telling me my picture was still in my room the man he wanted to show it to having gone out of town. I had written him again today. Alice sent me her photograph and her two little girls.

Wednesday 13. Beautiful cool weather. Painted on the barn all day. Went down to John McEntees, Andrew & Lucy Sade and I Miss Price & Lily & Mrs. Livingston were there. Had a lottery for a charming bag which I won and gave to Sade. Sara had a most interesting letter from Lieut. Ray from Ooglaamie, Alaska on Point Barrow 72° north lat, & within the Arctic Circle written in Feb. with a postscript July 27 when it left by a whaler.

Thursday 14 Rained a little in the night and has been cloudy and threatening all day. The carpenter and the mason came and have been at work all day. I have been painting such and scuttling about generally.

Friday 15. Charming picturesque day, I longed to be out sketching. Worked hard all day painting on the barn. All the work is going on well.
