Republican ticket and in favor of the Constitutional amendment making the canals free. Tonight there is a rumor that the Republicans are disastrously defeated, as I anticipated. I should not be surprised if the Democratic governor (Cleveland) was elected by 100 000 majority. I think the Bosses will begin to believe the people are not to be trifled with. Painted all day in my studio on an autumn picture 20 x 30 and made satisfactory progress. I am aiming at brilliancy of color.

Wednesday Nov. 8" 1882. The morning was cloudy and threatening. I went over to my studio and worked all forenoon. After dinner the day turned out so beautiful that I took a walk over on the [[Vlightbergh?]] where I made a pencil sketch, and around over the hills above the far cement quarries and home through North Rondout. Notwithstanding the lovely day I have a restless dissatisfied feeling, and a sense of irritation. Sara and I called on the Washburnes (The Episcopal clergyman) in the evening. Clevelands majority is now said to be 180 000! I am glad it has been a crushing defeat. Nothing less would have opened the eyes of the wire pullers and Bosses, whose reign now is at an end I hope.

Thursday 9. An invitation from Whitelaw Reid to meet Herbert Herkomer the English artist at dinner on Monday night. I accepted by telegraph. Painted all day in my studio on a little picture from the drawing I made yesterday from the [[Vlightbergh?]] but it is not satisfactory. I shall do another tomorrow. Wrote to Mrs. Winter to have my rooms ready and to Wilmont ordering a frame 20 x 24. A letter from Mary telling of Downing, very slow progress. Cannot sit up more than an hour at a time.

Friday 10. Worked in my studio painting a little picture of the same thing I did yesterday but did not finish it. The day was so beautiful that I thought it more profitable to take a walk which I did, going along the Vlight bergh again to take a look at my subject which looked beautifully under the mellow Indian summer light, then down to the point where Park had a swim, along the shore by the ice house where our old barn is being turned into an addition to the ice house where I stopped and made a little pencil drawing looking up the river. I passed the brickyards and went up the field above the steep rocks across the hills toward the Alms house and home through Ludlums woods. It was one of the loveliest of days and everything was glorified in the golden air.

Saturday 11 Worked in my studio painting another small view from the Vlight bergh which is better than the other but I do not seem to be able to get the variety of effect I try for. It has been a threatening day totally unlike yesterday. Bierstadts house at Irvington burned last night.
