the tears thinking of the dear one who slept below it. I think so tenderly of her now while Alice is here. She brings
her near to me. Downing and Mary came up by the City of Calskill. I had a carriage to meet them and meant to be there myself but the boat arrived earlier than I was told she would and they passed me in the carriage in the dark on my way down. I found them at supper when I returned and Downing sat up until nearly ten oclock and was not fatigued by his journey. He came up stairs with a little assistance to my room which I have put at his disposal, I sleeping on my lounge.

Sunday Dec. 3, 1882. A clear cold day. I was in the house all day and wrote to Booth. It is very pleasant to have Mary and Alice and Downing here. I wish we were able to have some one visiting us most of the time. I can see the good effect of society on my father who is much better.

Monday 4. A very cold morning. Our thermometer marked one o' below zero at 8 oclock and the papers say the mercury was down to 3° below. Alice and I came down in the noon train which was 40 minutes late. The cars were cold and the ride tedious. Spent the evening with Calvert and Marion and came to my room early.

Tuesday 5. Have been painting all day on a picture of bright Autumn color I began up home. Hubbard told me my November was sold in Brooklyn for 350. Marion and I called on Mrs. Booth and afterwards on Mr. & Mrs. Donaldson at the Florence. Afterwards I went around to the club.

Wednesday 6. Painting all day on my large picture of the brook and I think I have improved it. Alice and Mrs. Banning called and I took Alice to see Whittredge and Hubbard. Spent the evening at Mrs. Bannings.

Thursday 7. Painted on some last years pictures, among others a snow picture. In the evening Marion, Bowyer and I went to the Grand Opera house to see Lotta in Zip.

Friday 8. Bitterly cold weather. I awoke too late to go to breakfast and had it in my room. Commenced a picture but I feel depressed and somewhat discouraged which I know I will not when I get fairly to work. My mind seems full of things I want to paint which evade me when I get at work. Sometimes it seems as though my day is passed and different things are demanded from what I do. If I can only get at work on an interesting subject I will be contented. I went to an afternoon tea at Mrs. Robt de Forests and after dinner as Marion had some young people Calvert and I went to the Union Square theatre to see the "R[[?]]" one of the "tearing" plays they always have there. Afterward we went to the club for a short time.
