in hopes I may get at work again and sink my anxieties in my work. Calvert and I went this evening to the private view of the Water Color Society. They seem to have a very interesting exhibition and such a crowd of artists, very few of whom I know. My large picture October is hung in a capital place near the centre of the large gallery on the line. My smaller one is in the East gallery a little above the line but in an excellent place. I am very fortunate I think. My picture came back from Atlanta today to my great disappointment for I had every reason to think it was sold. I was depending on that money and it disappoints me greatly. My two pictures went to Springfield today "The Uplands in November" and "Shadows of Autumn."

Saturday Jan. 27" 1883. Began a picture 20 x 24 of a subject looking over the river, a bright sunny day in late Autumn and made a good start. I went home by the 3.30 train. Tom met me at Rhinebeck with Sara and Gussie. I found my mother only a very little improved.

Sunday 28. It rained and I painted on my figure again to finish the drapery. It was very dark where I sat but I improved it very much and call it done now. The rain cleared toward evening. We have had very cold weather up to this time.

Monday 29. This would have been my dear Gertrudes forty ninth birth day. They come and go but she never grows older to me. Mary and I came down in the noon train. Tom drove us over on the ice and Pa, who did not feel well this morning, and little Charlie came along for a ride. I left home with regret. The day is full of sad memories and besides I have anxieties which I wish I could put at rest. Spent the evening at Eastman Johnsons. Met Mr & Mrs Col Gillespie, Mrs. Austin Flint, Mr & Mrs Lockwood Deforest and several others.

Tuesday 30". Went to see Marius Finch to see if he could pay me the note of $100 I paid for him a short time ago but got little encouragement. Like me he has more than he can do. He is to come to see me on Thursday. I worked a little on my figure and finished it I think. Went to see Wilmont who is to have a frame ready for it on Saturday so that I can send it to the Century. Painted on my landscape. Mr & Mrs Church came in. Dined at Fred Nortons with Annie Lee. Julia Dillon and Mr. Benedict came in.
