Sunday Apl 15" 1883. Girard and I walked up to the West Shore depot to see the building and some of the new cars. It was not a very pleasant day, cool and windy and dusty. I wrote to Mary Gifford.

Monday 16. Grafted some pear trees and budded some peach and cherry trees, the first I ever did. Went to the Strand to do some errands, had my hair cut and paid the note for $300 I got discounted when I paid our taxes. So my money goes. I never seem to get ahead. My father told me of another note for $330 to the Abbeys due on Saturday. I gave him $50 to pay it. I am almost discouraged and I see that all this worries and troubles my poor mother. Rained this afternoon. Came down with the evening train and went to the Club for supper.

Tuesday 17. Awoke with a headache as I invariably do after coming down from home, the result I think, of eating a late supper. Went to the dentists at noon. Tried to paint in the afternoon but my head felt so badly I accomplished little. Mrs Pychowska called. Spent the evening at home. Have felt discouraged and depressed, the result of course of my physical condition.

Wednesday 18. A note from Fuller still wishing for the evening mist picture so I made another attempt at it with a canvas more the proportions of the sketch. Had to go to the dentists for two hours in the midst of it. Weir came in towards evening and invited me to go to Coney Island tomorrow with him and his wife. Dined at Frank Musks with him and his wife and Miss Margaret Blake and at 9 went to the Century to attend a meeting of the Art Union. Dilman said a certain party of artists he met hailed this enterprise with shouts of derision. That indicates the state of hostility of some of them.

Thursday 19. Joined Weir and his wife at the St. Denis hotel and went to Coney Island, a long ride with the horse cars through Brooklyn nearly to Greenwood where we took [[steam?]] car and went to Brighton pier. The wind was East and this day not entirely clear. Wandered along the beach until lunch which we got at Vandeveers, not very nice and came back at 4 reaching home at 6 pretty tired. Called at Fred Nortons in the evening. Have invited Mrs. Weir & Lily to lunch tomorrow. If they cannot come will let me know by 8.

Friday 20. A showery morning. Mary went to Alpine. I had my ladies lunch. Mrs. Weir, Lily French and Clara Greble came. It is four years since I have seen Lily. She seemed as she always did only a little tempered I thought by the years. I enjoyed their visit and apparently they did. They were obliged to go
