morning and this afternoon he and I walked through the strand down to Ponckhockie and home by the quarries and the Point road.

Monday Dec. 17th 1883. Made a box for the two little pictures of my Mother and sent them by express to Lucy with a few little articles from Sara which belonged to our mother and poor Maurice. Wrote Lucy last night that she might look for this box about Christmas. A doleful little letter came from Sedgwick telling me if the tragic end of little "Brownie" without in the least giving me an idea of who or what "Brownie" was. Snowed a little last night and the landscape I thought so beautiful yesterday wears an equal but a different beauty today. Went to N.Y. by the 4.32 N. S. train arriving at my rooms at 8. Went out to Silsbees and got some supper. Calvert came to Fishkill by this morning's Hudson River train. Found only three of my rugs at my room. A short note from Lucy sending me Miss. McAlisters address, and telling me that Brownie was Sedgwicks little dog, killed before his eyes by some great grey hounds. My visit home was most pleasant. Tuesday 18th Completed my Xmas purchases, which I make in the morning before the stores are crowded. Booth did not come as he wrote he would. Began one of the pictures for Reichardt. Went up to the Art Union which I saw was lighted with the electric light. Found Kurtz there cataloging the pictures. The light was excellent. Wrote to Mr. Monett the general passenger agent of the West Shore road giving him my views at length on baggage express monopolies and the inefficient service for exorbitant charges.

Wednesday 19. Snow storm last night and sleighing in the City. Downing came from Hillsboro this morning. May came down from Rondout in the snowstorm which continues today. Worked on "Telling the bees" a lovely quiet day to work. Went to the Art Union Reception this evening. Very few there and very small attendance today as the storm was severe. However they took about 20 subscriptions. Whittredge was there and Eastman came. They both came to my studio with me. Showed interest in my picture and Whittredge said he had a drawing of some hives which he would hunt up and bring to me. Eastman stayed until after midnight

Thursday 20. All day at work on my figure. Whittredge brought me the sketch of the hives which I have used. Century trustees meeting in the evening. Newtons case reported upon by Nash and his report ordered to be presented to the annual
