Wednesday Feb 13. The weather continues to be as disagreeable as is possible. The fog is something extraordinary and everyone is talking about it. The floods in the Ohio are the highest in many years and there is great suffering and destruction of property. Have had many visits and done much better painting. Sara came and I went up to this Art Union with her. After I came back Kurtz came and I gave him his drawing of my Academy picture for his "Notes" also a Mrs. of Lake Louisiana for the Art Museum Journal for March. Sara and I went to Dalys theatre to see 7.20.8 which we both enjoyed greatly.

Thursday 14. At last an agreeable change in the weather has occurred. Towards evening after a day of fog, violent showers and discomfort the temperature fell and the wind came from the N.W. Sara, Julia and Marion came over by invitation and breakfasted with me in my studio. Have worked a little on my Kaatskills in winter and shall send it to the Academy. In the afternoon Sara met Mr & Mrs. Ed. Tomkins at Macys and also Mrs T's sister and they all came around here for a little while. Sara and I called on Annie and Aunt Christina and I went from there to the club where I had a long talk with Perry and Reinstadt on Art Mission affairs which are not in a prosperous condition.

Friday 15th. Called on Lang in his bachelor quarters in Waverly Place. The building is on the site of the house occupied by Dr.[[Dunning?]]. I remember Lang as a young man. Now he is 70 years old and as completely lost sight of as an article as if he were dead and buried. It admonished me that my day of obscurity is not very far off. A bright beautiful day is today and most enjoyable after protracted gloomy weather. I worked on my Winter in the Kaatskills and I think it is finished. It interests me but whether it will anyone else remains to be seen. I've chosen a frame for it today and intend to send it to the Academy. Edith Cook called. Sara went home today. There is a rumor that Vanderbilt has got possession of the West Shore road. It is claimed by his authority in the Post but I am afraid he will get it. Next to the club after dinner and spent the evening. Had a letter from Mrs. Pelton written in a somewhat calmer frame of mind. Also an invitation to a reception to meet Madame [[Modjeska?]] on Tuesday at the Clarendon, from Mrs. Kimball, which I have declined. There is no satisfaction to me in meeting distinguished people in a crowd of lion hunters.

Saturday 16. Breakfasted in my room. Fuller came in and I arranged with him to do some papering etc up at house for which I am to paint a small picture. Went home by 3:40 train from 42nd St. Tom met me with a sleigh although the sleighing is nearly all gone. The ice has gone out of the creek but not out of the river. The ferry boat is running. Gussie and Gertrude came from the Cove today and Mary Gifford from Hudson. John and Nannie and Joanna came and spent the evening.
