Wednesday, April 15" 1885. The weather is cold and disagreeable and the grass is only just beginning to show a hint of green in the parks. I have painted on my picture but do not improve it much. I think I should set it aside for a while. Carl Brunner an artist from Louisville called, also Miss Pierce who was at High Falls a couple of summers. It began to rain a little afternoon but did not continue I had arranged to go to Dobbs Ferry and was in some doubt what to do. I finally went however. Found no one home but Emma and Leta. Emma and I took a walk back from their place past country seats and skirting woods. It was pretty wet. Shortly after we returned we had supper and I came to town by 7.44 train as there was no other until after 10. Went to the club. Hewitt and Stout were there talking on political matters. I thought Hewitt didn't show much love for the administration. I think he is disappointed not to have been given an important foreign mission.

Thursday 16" Received a letter from Sara this morning telling me Mr. Willis died on Tuesday. Mrs. Willis sent for her and told her she would like me to be one the bearers and I have telegraphed I would be there tomorrow at 1.15. Mrs. Rossita Johnson called with a Mrs. Peabody and her daughter & Mrs. Johnsons daughter.

Friday 17 Went home by 10 oclock train and attended Mr. Willis' funeral as one of the bearers. His death was very sad for I heard his illness was caused by business anxiety. He has left a wife and two children to struggle through life he I am afraid having been unable to make any provision for them.

Saturday 18" Went down town and had my hair cut. Took off the double windows and worked about the rose bushes. It was a beautiful day

Sunday 19. I think this is the 24" anniversary of the firing on the Massachusetts troops in Baltimore. A lovely mild day and yet there is plenty of snow on the mountains. Took my father out for a ride. Sara, Gerardie & Charlie went along, around by the Point and the river road to the Flat-bush hill and home by the Alms House. My father got pretty tired but he dined with us and after his afternoon rest looked brighter. Mr & Mrs. Cantine called in the afternoon and in the evening Girard & Mary and John & Nannie.

Monday 20" Went down town and bought a wheelbarrow and got a man from Canfields to come up and repair the refrigerator and to mend a leak in the gutter. Minnie announced that the kitchen drain was stopped and we had a siege at that also but whether we cleared it remains to be seen. My father spent a part of the day sitting out on the porch as it was a warm still day. Tom worked in the flower bed where my Mother used to entertain herself these spring days and I did various things. We transplanted a climbing rose which has been struggling at the back porch, down to the rear of the wood house where I hope it will have chance to grow. Tom drove me up to the 7.15 evening train but it was nearly half an hour late. We came down flying and arrived here nearly on time. Went out and got some oysters and came back to my room and read my letters. Found one from Detroit telling me both the pictures I sent out were sold. The Shadows of Autumn to Mr. Hecker who
