which she did. I took her over to see my picture just before we started a little after 1. We went through Eddyville, Creek Locks and Riverdale. The landscape was rich and charming but the wind was from the North and a part of the time it was pretty hot. When we arrived there they were all napping but we saw Lily and Aunt Christina, Annie having a head ache did not appear. They had tea for us at half past five and at 6 we started for home by Lucas turnpike and had a pleasant drive home, the moon coming up just at sunset and the air going cool and pleasant. I picked the first okra today and the last planting of peas. I find there is no use trying to have peas so late as they mold and do not do well.

Tuesday July 28" 1885. I had a very pleasant informal reception over at my studio this forenoon to show my picture "Desolated Shrines" Nannie, Annie Lee and Maurice Livingston, Mrs. Van Deusen Alida and Miss Powell (visiting Alida) Sara, Alice, Julia and Marion being my guests. We had a pleasant, jolly time and all seemed to enjoy it as I did very much. It seemed to be a revival of the days of long ago when Dear Gertrude gathered our friends about us under this roof and the place seemed more silent and lonely than ever after they had all gone. We went down to the Point to bathe after dinner, Marvin, Sara, Julia and Alidas two little girls. There were a number of bathers there to our disappointment and I did not bathe. We took Park along who enjoyed it more than any one else. Annie Lee came to tea and spent the evening. They go to High Falls tomorrow. Mrs. Ludlum died today. Looking at the little sketch, in the poster, of our camp at the head of the Rondout I find it was made nine years ago today. To my great upset it is more than probable that the West Shore Railroad will soon pass into the hands of Vanderbilt.

[[Newspaper clipping]] Death of Mrs. Gabriel W. Ludlum.
Mrs. Gabriel W. Ludlum died at her residence on Hasbrouck avenue, in this city, at 8 o'clock this forenoon. She was a daughter of Abraham Hasbrouck, and was born on what is now known as The Strand, Rondout, on the 13th of May, 1805. Mrs. Lundlum was the wife of Gabriel W. Ludlum, who was at one time judge of Sullivan county, under an appointment by Governor Marcy, and who also did a large business tanning in 1826, when settled in Woodbourne. He was in the law business in Kingston in 1838 as a law partner of Judge Forsyth, and lived at Napanoch in business for some years. He was a man of great influence in his day, and died by a fall from his horse in California in 1872. Mrs. Ludlum was a sister of Jansen Hasbrouck, Mrs Helen Sharpe, mother of Gen. George H. Sharpe, and Mrs. Robert Gosman. Her children who survive her are James, Anna, Helen and Minnie, the wife of F. A. Waters. Mrs. Ludlum was an eminently Christian lady and for years took a great interest in the Rondout Presbyterian church, to which she belonged. She was generally beloved and respected by all who knew her. Wednesday 29". Took my father out for a drive after which I went for Sara at John McEntees and drove up to the Ludlums but the family were engaged and Sara saw only Mrs Ludlum, Jas. Ludlums daughter. I worked a little on the sky in Fullers picture this afternoon and made a small sketch of a twilight sky I saw a few evenings ago. Annie Lee and Nannie went to High Falls today. Sara and I called on them. After tea Sara and I drove down to call on Mr & Mrs. Lindsley. It has been a hot day but fine air and a breeze

Thursday 30" Mrs. Lindsley came up to see my picture this morning also Mrs. Willis and some of the little girls of the hill with their dolls. I put on the hose and watered the flower garden which has been a failure this year. I got up at 5 o'clock this morning and worked in it and discerned that it is a mass of fine roots just below the surface. I shall remove every thing to the vegetable garden next year and do away with this one. Sara and I attended Mrs. Ludlums funeral this afternoon from her house. Dr. Magee and Mr. Irvin officiated. The burial was private. After we returned I drove out with my father, Sara, Alice's children and little Dwight whose mother is in N.Y.
