Sunday Aug. 7, 1887. It has finally cleared and this morning is delightfully cool and invigorating with a brisk north wind and there seems a decided break in the uncomfortable weather. We are worrying over our tickets to Fort Bridger. I have been over to see Girard. Since, I have had such a shock. A letter from Booth from the Bay of Fundy Aug. 4" in which he says he cannot let me have the money he promised me and asking rather coldly why we dont settle the estate and so get out of my worries. Well I cant wonder. I have been too great a tax on him and I cant blame him. But it made my brain reel for a while. Mary and Sara urge me to go in spite of everything. I have written to Sam sending a note for $750 in place of the one coming due Sept. 3" and a check for the interest. Girard is to give us the tickets and we are to go tomorrow night. I am in a dazed state. It all seems wild and crazy to me but I hope it is for the best. Mary and Sara seem sure it is and so I am going. I also had a long letter from Mr. Sawyer telling me all about Oscars burial and the confusion from not receiving the telegrams.

Monday 8. Another cool, fine day. I slept badly and awoke with many misgivings and full of nerves. Mary and Sara say I must go at all hazards and we are going tonight. We have our tickets to Granger about 50 miles this side Carter - the cost to that point 64.60. I shall not be able to take enough money to return but trust to luck for that as I am obliged to for many things. I feel very troubled and my head swims, and I am very lame. O I hope I will find some relief out there. Neri & his wife and Mary Gifford called on us on their way to Minnewaska. They spent nearly an hour with us and Jamie took them up to the train. They are glad I am going. I always felt badly leaving home, and I have a homesick feeling now. I would not think of going under the circumstances just for my own selfish pleasure. I hope it will make me well and strong. We go at 9 o'clock tonight by West Shore road.

Sunday Oct. 9" 1887. I returned this evening from my two months visit to Lucy and Andrews at Fort Bridger where Jamie and I went via Chicago and the Union Pacific railroad on Aug. 8". The experience has been in every way most satisfactory. I am much improved in health and spirits. When I arrived there I did not dare attempt to ride a horse but a few days before I left I rode forty miles on horseback and without unusual fatigue. I made a number of sketches, was entirely free from anxieties and responsibilities and left with regret. Here is a brief record of the time spent there.
