mailed a letter to Sara but found none from her. Have made some measurements over at my house with reference to some alterations if we should go there to live. Am reading Violet le Duc's story of a horse. Went over to the slide and spent an hour and a half there this afternoon. There were very few there and I had two rides alone. The mercury was at 20° and consequently not so good for speed.

Wednesday Feb. 1" 1888 Mercury at 0° again this morning. I went down town but there was no word from Sara. I got a note from Wilmart saying Feb. 2 would be in good time to order my frames, but would not make it later. I shall go to N.Y. tomorrow whether Sara comes or not. I saw by the World that the law permitting auction sales of pictures after dark had passed the Senate and now goes to the Governor. A sale of pictures for the benevolent fund of the Artists fund brought very low prices, but it was down town and in the daytime. I am anxious about the result of my sale but must take the risk.
