He does not care to go until about Feb. 1" and will wait even longer if I want to. I asked him if he thought my companionship would be worth what it would cost him and he said "ten times more." I proposed his taking Ferguson but he said he wanted me. I went over and lunched with Mary and she and I went up to the reception at The Art Museum on the occasion of the opening of the new wing. There were a great many people and some of the galleries were crowded. We met the Messrs Sedgwick, Pinchot & his wife, Cransch & Carrie, Mrs. Carpenter, Collins, Story, Ryder, and many others. We saw the fine Van Dycks, Rembrandts, [[strikethrough]] Turners [[/strikethrough]], Constables &c belonging to Marquand and also the Sir Joshua, a portrait of a lady who looked like Gertrude Tomkins. They are getting some very interesting things and really it is fast becoming a great center of attraction in the city. We walked down to the 59" St & 7 Av entrance and took the Broadway cars back. Pinchot and his wife are going to Mexico on Jan 14". I told him I thought some of going and he wanted me to go with them. Marion came home from Baltimore this evening. I attempted to read and spend the evening at home but two young men came to see her and I fled to the Century where I saw Dr Coan, Perry, Collins and others and came to my room about 10.

Wednesday Dec. 19" 1888. Cold and bracing. I went to Van Tines and bought some Xmas presents and to the Palais Royal and ordered a frame for a print for Marion. I went to Wilmonts to see why my frame for Husteds picture had not come and found his place closed on account of the death of his wife. Husted from whom I received a note yesterday came today and he was delighted with his picture which I am to send him Friday and for which he is to pay me $300 and the frame besides. Have been painting all day on Mr. Welles picture. Wrote Mrs. Darley from whom I had a letter on Monday. Went to the reception of the ladies Art Association on a top floor in 14" St. A crowded room lighted by Kerosene lamps with a vile atmosphere, not a soul I knew and depressing Art, so far as I was able to see. Verestschagin was there. Not an attractive looking man if I were not mistaken in the person

Thursday 20. Went to the dentists. Not so much to be done as I feared. Called at Wilmurts but the place was still closed although I saw in the paper his wife was to be buried yesterday. I promised Husted to send his picture tomorrow. Sedgwick came to my studio at 1. and I went with him over to Jersey City and put him on the train for Wilmington where he has gone to spend his Xmas vacation. He had a letter from his mother this morning on the train between Chicago and Omaha. She came near not making the connection at Chicago. Pinchot was in this afternoon. He and his wife, and daughter are going to Mexico and he hopes I will go. Whittredge came in. He told me there is to be a meeting of the Paris exp. Jury on Saturday night and I have written Sara that I will come up on Sunday. Bowyer and his wife were at dinner with us. I spent the evening there.

Friday 21". This is I believe the shortest day of the year. I always think of Taylors "O darkest day of all the year". I love
