them have the 4 lots for $3200 but he was only one of their executors. I reluctantly consented and have written Calvert to see what he says. Cantine said in an exulting way to Girard "you missed it not to accept the offer of 27.000 that we never would realize $25.000 for our property. I am disappointed in Cantine and am inclined to think he is not a sincere friend and that he would favor an outside person at our expense. He does not talk and bear himself as expected he would. He talks two ways. He told me not long ago that we would never sell our place as a whole and avised cutting it up into lots. That there were many people in Rondout who he was sure would buy smaller lots and that he thought he could sell several. Mainly from his suggestion I was first reluctantly inclined to do that very thing and when we did deliberately adopt this plan and saw that it would bring more money in this way and it had been surveyed and advertised, at the last day he comes with an offer from some unknown party, whom he professes himself not to know, and a good deal below what he himself a short time ago considered it worth and criticizes us for not accepting it.- Mr. Gilliss wants to know what we will take for lot No. 1 and I told Girard to tell him $1200 as Girard says he knows another party who would like that. I think time will prove we have not been unwise - Sara went to Kingston after dinner. It continued to rain all afternoon at intervals. Mrs. Waters drove up in her carriage with Mrs. Tolles and they made a call. Mrs. Tolles was on her way to N.Y. from her sister Mrs. Dodges cottage at [[?]] and the mountains. It is still raining as I go to bed although the wind has changed out more to the N. or rather N.E. It was a good piece of luck that I fixed our sale for yesterday as today it would have been impossible.

Wednesday Sept. 18" 1889. It has rained most of the day but cleared toward evening. I went to Kingston with all the data for making out the deeds &c. Mr Kenyon got the proper blanks for me and instructed me how to fill them out and I came home and went at it and have them all done. A telegram from Eastman came while I was in Kingston saying he would come tomorrow by the 9.55 train. The telegram was dated the 18" Just after we had finished our dinner a cab drove up bringing him. He said he sent the telegram yesterday and yet he arrived here nearly soon as that did. We have finally decided to go to the Maine woods. Oct. 1" We both have fears of not being ready but we will make our arrangements for that time. He is to return by the early train tomorrow.

Thursday 18" Eastman went by the early train this morning. We have arranged to go to Midway Oct. 1" to reach there the 2". A telegram came for him this forenoon which showed it was wise he went. I went down town and received a letter from Calvert and one from Church and then went to Kenyons in Kingston where I wrote out the releases and some other papers and brought the mortgages to fill out. At 3 o'clock I attended Victor Quilliards funeral at the Episcopal church. The services were not impressive to me but otherwise and I want no such incantations and parade over me. Gulian was there looking some thing as his father used to- I have written Royal Reed tonight engaging him and his two sons and three birches to go up into the woods with us and that we will be in Midway Oct. 2. I have written to Church and Eastman. Not long after I received Church's letter today Beulah Smith came here with a letter directed to Sara which she found torn open in their yard. It was dated July 14 and was from Mrs Church in answer to Saras letter and mine and we have all this while wondered why we had not heard from her. I am very tired tonight. We continue to have inquiries about lots and I heard today the person who wanted to buy the whole place was still corresponding about it. Cantine said to Girard today "mark my words, you will never get one cent from your fathers estate" which was injudicious to say the least.
