Gifford was haunting the Seashore and all the fellows off. He had been no in Connecticut for 6 weeks. and had been rather unwell all summer. I see in the papers an account of Booth's new Theatre. in prospectus. In front of the Building he proposes to have Thompson's Shakespeare. colossal. and T. seemed mightily pleased with the idea. and I am glad of it for his sake as well for the public good. The Theatre is to be built Cor 23rd St & 6th Ave. a fine location. In rambling the deserted halls of the Studio Building I found a loving message from some dear friend on your door. to wit - "to meet thee by moonlight alone." or something to that effect. Mrs. Winter was there with usual smiles & graces and presentment of little bill. She no [[strikethrough]]]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] doubt has a neat one prepared for you of delicate proportions and slender length. beginning with the usual "March for Mr. McEntee". Thompson had a great story to tell about Johnson & Pinchot going to Shrewsbury by the sound boat. as told to him by Hennessy. H_ says about midnight he was awakened by the sound of some awful crash and jumped from his birth to ascertain the cause. At the door of the stateroom a few doors off he to no little surprise. hears Johnson's voice and Pinchots'. Johnson explaining apologetically to Pinchot that he was wakened by something dashing furiously against the window of this state room. which proved to be a heavy rain. but Johnson mistook it for seas imagining the boat was going under. and so he deliberately smashed in his window as a means of egress. Imagine Johnson's earnest vehement voice at that time of night under the circumstances and all ending in a hearty laugh. I saw no one else in the City whom you know. On our way back here we met at one of the stations where we had to wait half an hour Ward. Sculptor. I had a good lazy time during my two weeks visit doing nothing but being idle to a luxurious extent
