VELMA DUNCAN Auditor For a number of years the Douglass Trustees have depended upon certain people to give donations and memberships to carry on the Douglass Home work. This has not proven the best method, as negroes are great starters but not much on sticking to a finished job. They like a life of ease. They are much like the story of Brother Rabbit and the Tortoise. They think they can run faster than other after they rest awhile, but it the steady pace of Brother Tortoise that will win the race of our success. The aims and plans of the Trustees is to make the home of Mr. Douglass the kind of shrine it should be. In 1949 the Trustees and a Douglass Committee came to Washington in a three days conference to make plans for a long range program, to make the Douglass Home a similar place as Mount Vernon. The major problem was then and is now, finance greatly needed. You must have seen the building going on there at Cedar Hill. This is the Trustees first step towards establishing a fund that will bring in some annual cash. I expect to be in Washington soon this year to plan a program for dedicating these new buildings. We need your help and thinking w these plans. Please send me your ideas of what you think might help in these plans. I can assure you that all money raised, or donated to the Douglass House will be used in a proper manner for upkeep and improvements much needed to the house and grounds. Thanking you for your interest and help I am waiting for your early reply. Yours for Lifting as we climb, Emma I. Dickson, President
