Qualls General Chairman The Coordinating Committee of Anacostia and Vicinity Dear Mr. Qualls: Your letter was received and contents carefully noted. You state that you did not receive an answer from me. I certainly wrote you the last letter and I wondered why you did not answer. When I was in Washington last August at our N.A.C.W. convention, I wanted to see you but in my haste, leaving I forgot to carry your address. I was kept so busy with meetings that I did not have time to look you up in the phone director. I received a letter from the Washington Afro American newspaper, stating their desire to help us. I have not wanted to make public some things about our Douglass Home but I will say this, if the moneys that come in for the Douglass Home is given to the Trustees, we could do a few things. When I took over the business in 1951 after the death of Mrs. Sallie W. Stewart things were in a bad shape financially. With the meager means that have come into the Douglass treasure the Trustees have done what could best be done. The money that has come ear marked for the Douglass Homeinto the National treasure is not readily given to the Douglass, yet the NACW always say that they maintain the Douglass Home. The Douglass home was neglected by the people long before the present Trustees took over the work. I I was happy when I received your first letter because I thought you would help us. I certainly tried to make clear in my last letter to you that we were glad to have you help us. I have talked with some Trustees by long distance and by letter about what you had said to me as regards to your helping us.
