Office of the President
January 21, 1955

My dear Trustee:
This is a call to action now! You saw the needs of your Douglass Home last summer when we were in Washington for our N.A.C.W. Convention.

Mrs. Gaines, our N.A.C.W. President, has sent you the articles made public by the Afro-American of D.C. The Trustees are directly charged with the upkeep of the house and grounds, etc.

The National Association of Colored Women are charged with their help to do their share. I have talked over long distance with Mrs. Gaines. She states that the women want something done to the house with their money -- $2,000 -- which she will release as soon as we let out bids for some work on the house.

I have always been in favor of fixing the house first because unless repairs are made soon, the house will be gone as the other two buildings have gone.

The roadway and other buildings will have to wait until we raise money for their work. There is a balance on the fence which is very urgent and must be paid soon. I had promised to pay the balance -- $800 -- when the money came in from the apartments.

I have just received a letter from the Douglass Glen Gardens Association, Inc., stating that due to the fact the business ran at a loss last year, 1954, they are unable to pay us the $3000 which is due now. They will send me their audited report which I shall mail a copy to you. They are working to have a payment this year.

Every Douglass Trustee is urged to raise $200 each as soon as possible. I am planning a musical program for February 18, as well as the celebration of Douglass Day, Sunday, February 20. I hope to raise $200 or more as my share in this Trustee Campaign for now. There are many ways to raise the money. Use whatever plan you may have in mind but please get to work right away so that the fence bill balance can be paid. We must help with the bids on the work to be done in the house also.

The National Association of Colored Woman, Inc. cooperates in maintaining the Frederick Douglass Memorial Home.
MRS. IRENE McCOY GAINES, PRESIDENT, 3262 VERNON AVE., CHICAGO, ILL.
