Dear Dr. Quarles,

I had to get out a number of letters to the Trustees and to our N.A. C.W. President Mrs. Gaines. I delayed mailing my letter toanswer your present letter. Enclosed is one of the letters sent to all Trustees. Thanks for your letter of January 20a and the copy of the letter sent to Mrs. Gaines.

When I told you in my first letter that I was happy to hear from you, Imeant that. I had hoped to surprise you by coming there the last of the month, but now I can not at this time. I am working plans to raise some money as I have asked each Trustee to do.

It seems to me that as I read the set up of your Coordinating Committee, your group is so well organized that you are really a citizen group now. I do not see why you could not state what you could or wish to do, then go ahead with that. Seems to me, from what you stated in the Afro- American paper that "it was up to me". I have given you the go- sign, there is no reason to set up another Committee. You might set up a committee in your group and say to it- now you can do such and such a thing.

In this special group or committee they could appoint even a treasurer to hold the moneys you collect for the Douglass work If you and this committee should say, we want to mend the roof, N.A.C.W. might say, we want to get the furnace, and the Douglass would say we want to get the inside of the rooms painted andput up pretty curtains and re-do a chair or some thing else needed, Afro- American would collect donations to build the new roadway, then all of us working together with each a special job to do, before we knew it, a great job would be done.

The Frederick Doulglass Memorial is a greater cause than any one or even two groups. I mean the cause is greater than any of us all! Mrs. Helen Pitts Douglass saw what was in her find husband and she wanted a whole nation of people to make their home a shrine in his honor! WE, all Negro people in this country should do every thing possible to make this man's home areal shrine!
