1 nor more than nine, who shall be elected by the corporators
2 at their first meeting or at such time thereafter as the said
3 corporators may at the said first meeting appoint for that
4 purpose. In case of a vacancy or vacancies occuring in
5 said board of trustees by death, resignation, or otherwise, the
6 same shall be filled by the remaining members thereof. Said
7 hoard of trustees shall have perpetual succession, and in them
8 and their successors shall be vested the power hereinbefore
9 granted to this association. They shall adopt a common
10 seal, which they may alter at pleasure, under and by which
11 all deeds and acts of the association shall be passed and
12 authenticated. They shall elect such officers as they may
13 deem necessary, including a treasurer, for such terms and at
14 such compensation as they may prescribe, in accordance with
15 the by-laws which may be established for the government of 
16 said association. The said treasurer shall give such bond as
17 may be fixed by the by-laws, and all of the officers of the
18 association, together with such agents and employees as it
19 may be deemed necessary to employ, shall be subject to re-
20 moval for such cases and under such conditions and regula
21 -tions as may be prescribed by the by-laws.
22 SEC. 5. That no misnomer of the said corporation shall
23 defeat or annul any grant, donation, gift, devise, or bequest
24 to or from said corporation.
25 SEC. 6. That the said corporation may cause to be

1 erected at such suitable site upon the homestead aforesaid,
2 after acquisition of title to same as aforesaid, as may be
3 selected by the board of trustees, a monument to the memory
4 of the late Frederick Douglass, of such character and at such
5 cost as in their judgment may seem fit, in accordance with the
6 means of said association and compatible with the objects and
7 purposes thereof.
8 SEC. 7. That the said board of trustees of the Frederick
9 Douglass Memorial and Historical Association be, and they
10 are hereby, authorized and empowered to organize auxiliary
11 associations in the various States and counties of this Union,
12 or elsewhere, to the extent that they may be able to do so
13 for the purpose of soliciting funds and transferring the same
14 to the treasurer of said association to carry into effect the
15 objects and purposes of the said association as hereinbefore
16 expressed.
17 SEC. 8. [[italics]]That when the said corporation shall hare ac-
18 quired title in fee simple to the whole or a part, as the case
19 may be, of the said property known as Cedar Hill, in the
20 village of Anacostia, in the District of Columbia, and for-
21 merly occupied as the homestead of the late Frederick: Doug-
29 las, said land and premises shall be, and hereby are,
23 declared to be forever quit and free from all taxes or charges
24 and assessments whatever, whether the same taxes or charges
25 and assessments be general or special.
