THE NEW
CHINA REVIEW
EDITOR: SAMUEL COULING, M.A., Medhurst College, Shanghai.
Compiler of The Encyclopaedia Sinica.

A new periodical devoted to the study of almost all subjects connected with China-its Archaeology, Art, History, Literature, Geography, Language, Religion, etc.

Since the ceasing of the China Review some eighteen years ago there has been no such sinological magazine published in English. There are almost valuable publications, more or less of the same character, published in French and issued away from China. Many will admit that it has been to the detriment of sinological studies that there was no monthly or quarterly Journal issued in China and in the English language, where American and British students might easily publish the results of their researches.

Early numbers will contain articles by Professors GILES, PARKER and CORDIER, Drs. LIONEL GILES, H. B. MORSE, MAJOR W. PERCEVAL YETTS, MESSRS. LAURENCE BINYON, B. L. HOBSON, A. VISSIÈRE, C. W. CAMPBELL, R. F. JOHNSTON, H. CHATLEY, D. SC., L. C. HOPKINS, REVS. A. C. MOULE, W. A. CORNABY, and the JESUIT FATHERS at ZI-KA-WEI, Professors LATOURETTE, ANEZAKI and other writers will also contribute, but the Editor having only just returned from Europe is not yet able to announce the writers in America, China and Japan who will provide papers.

Such a Review has long been needed. If it should fail after being started and should die for lack of support it will be a loss to science and speak badly for sinology. But it can only flourish if contributors and subscribers are in sufficient numbers. Students are therefore asked to send articles or notes to the Editor, and all friends of Chinese studies are asked to subscribe.

The Review will be bi-monthly, as the China Review was; the first number will be issued in March, and six numbers will be produced in the current year.

No. I will contain an etching by Major. W. Perceval Yetts, and a portrait of the late M. Edouard Chavannes. The provisional Contents of this number will be found overleaf.
