These men instead of going off and attending to their business, went back to their party who were about 100 yards distant from me, I saw one of my guard and three or four other freedmen coming across the square; (as you will see also by the evidence of Joseph Long) and this armed party of citizens Holloed, "Halt Halt Raney Raney" and fired upon on them, I immediately left my position and retreated, borrowed three horses, took a portion of my guard about one mile out of town, told them to go home, and started with two of them to Centerville about 2 or 3 o'clock at night, to report to Capt.
