Then the property came to be delivered by Dr. D.H. Crisp the nephew & Attorney of J.H. Crisp as he left for Brazil as soon as he sold his place, the property fell so far short of what it was represented, that when the note became due Mess Hanford & Willards refused to pay it, Dr. D.H. Crisp Attorney & R.V. Cook Esq of Columbus as Trustees under the deed of Trust then entered into a compromise with Mess H. & W. & agreed to deduct One Thousand six hundred & fifty dollars ($1650) specie from the note on account of the deficiencies, pending this compromise several of the freedmen had made complaints of the indebtedness of J.H. & A.S. Crisp to them & on the 2nd ult I issued my S.O. No 3 copy of which is annexed & in the 4th ult S.O. No. 5 these it was impossible at that time to readily hear & adjust owing to the famine that then existed throughout the country & general fear to come to Columbus where the yellow fever was represented to be prevailing.
