Within the past ten days, their behavior has undergone a great change for the worse. Why I cannot say, except that those in Office in this section of country are known to be their Friends, consequently will assist them in getting out of trouble.

I would respectfully report the following case. On the 17th inst a Freedman named Mingo Blankship complained to me that a certain Thos. Jefferson had threatened his life, by hanging on the 17th. ulto. and that said Jefferson was then in Town. Upon inquiry learned that this took place about 12 or 14 miles from Fairfield in this Co. and that he Blankship hid in the woods since. I requested Jefferson to come over to my Office, and then informed him of the charge preferred against him by the Freedman Mingo Blankship.

Mr Jefferson denied the charge, and said he could prove his innocince by witnesses next day. Had a number of cases on hand for that day but he appearing so anxious to clear himself I appointed the next day 18th inst for a hearing. The Freedman had to walk some 15 or 18 miles & return for his witnesses, but was on hand about 10 A.M.

Mr Jefferson reported late in the afternoon & informed me that he failed in getting his witnesses. I then took the evidence of the Freedman's witnesses (he had 4) and every one of them proved that Mr. Jefferson did get a rope and threaten to hang this Freedman, remarking at the same time that his (Freedmans) God was dead now, (meaning Mr Culver late Agent who had been murdered 2 days previous) and wanted to know what God he was going to serve next +c.
