Since mailing my letter of today I have rec'd information of the killing of two Freedmen near this place about three weeks since. One was shot dead while traveling on the public highway the other while sitting at his own fireside. The shot was made through an aperture in the wall, perpetrator unknown. In cases of this kind the Civil Authorities never notice them

There is really a horrible state of things in this portion of Texas all of which you are undoubtedly aware of

Saturday Eve a party of men rode around the public square yelling & fireing off their revolvers to the terror of all that happened to be out or heard them   If I had Cavalry I could stop all this  The Civil Authorities are perfectly powerless to arrest this disorder  in fact they never try & in this respect & most all others they are no better than the old
