would not receive that kind of money. I still refused to pay the specie, whereupon, I received orders through an inferior officer to pay the sum in specie, or in United States Currency at its present discount in market. I immediately went before him, and he decided that it should be paid without hearing any evidence, or attention to the decisions of the courts, that the said U.S. currency was a Legal Tender for any contract whatever; which I was compelled to do, as arrest, or other means of force would have been employed. I did so under compulsion and protest, and asked for an appeal to your hearing, and judgement. The receipt of which the following is a correct copy, was then given by said John Cartwright (Freedman) and intereped by said John H. Morrison. "Office Sub. Ast. Com. Bureau. R.F.&A.L. Palestine Tex. Jan 9th 1868. Received of John J. Harris the sum of forty nine dollars currency in full of the am't due John Cartwright for the amount due him, which is the sum of thirty nine 25/100 dollars specie
