I can give you no idea of the bitter demoniac hate felt for the Freed people & particularly myself. & as Election approaches it seems to become intensified. It is the common talk in the Rebel families that I am to be killed & that it is sure tho' delayed. It galls them to realize that the Freedmen have rights or that they are compelled to respect them. If one or two examples could be made it would soon quiet them, but they have gotten an idea that they could & can resist & even kill me & no punishment be meted out by the Comd'g General of the 5th District. Last week another Negro was found dead in the Prairie 8 miles from here. This makes three Freedmen killed within a short period
