Susanna Flernoy, Matthew Snowball, & Polina Brisco, left our premises and hired themselves to W. C. Beall. In the latter part of Jan'y 1867, the said freedmen & women requested that they might be permitted to return to our premises. They also requested other persons to intercede, for them with us to let them [[strikethrough]] come [[/strikethrough]] return. Stating, that W. C. Beall had not complied with the contract, and that they were afraid to leave without protection; and as there was no legal contract between said Parties, we permitted said freedmen to return.

No therefore, in consequence of our employing said freedmen, - after a lapse of a few months, we were taken prisenors and carried to Mt Pleasant, by a squad of Federal Soldiers, acting under orders from Col Starr - Col Starr having been actuated so to do, by W. C. Beall, and his daughter, Mrs. Babb; And after a partial trial, we were fined One Thousand Dollars, which we paid, after having lain in jail Eleven Days.
