I will not release Richardson or Tiller upon bond until furnished with orders from those Head Quarters  I would recommend that the present sheriff, W. Duke be removed and James Smeltzer be appointed Sheriff of this County 

Mr Smeltzer maintained, I think Union principles during the war, but nevertheless as that may be, a good man is requisite - whatever his former principles may have been

Mr S. will execute his duties more promptly, and I think would do his duty  I would request that this be considered with as little delay as possible

None of the men were wounded in the affair last evening. It is not known but more of the men are wounded who were concerned in the riot, or whatever it may be termed - it was uncalled for, & they understand it so, now.
