The parties returned to town and I am informed by the Mayor that he and others repaired to the freedmens village and had an interview with Brooks who claimed that his men had been killed and he would not agree to any terms of peace. This caused intense excitment in town and was the foundation of the hundreds of foolish rumor about the organization of the Blacks, subsequent to this an arrangement was made with Blacks as above mentioned
There has been for some time past a great antipathy against this freedman Brooks by the White population, and acquisitions of a grave character have been made against him. This I believe is mere [[strikethrough]] predjudice [[/strikethrough]] prejudice, and cannot be sustained by facts.
The number of killed and wounded is as follows Harry Thomas (col'd) the leader of the freedmen, [[?]] Hardy (col'd) King Holiday (col'd) wounded and died on the 17th Dan Zephyr (col'd) killed on Thurs 16th Geo E. Brooks (col'd) a Preacher [[strikethrough]] killed [/strikethrough]] supposed to have been killed on the 18th. Wounded Me Moore (col'd) shot thru right shoulder slight wound
