After he left, a freedman came in and said he had been robbed of his pistol and the man that just passed was the one.  I immediately ordered the Sheriff to summon a posse and arrest the man, but only three responded.  I saddled my horse and we started two of them kept up, but the third could not get his mule into a run.  We overtook him a mile from town and come upon him just as he was in the act of shooting a freedman whom he met on the road.  He had his gun drawn within a few feet of the boy's head.
