I packed up the papers books the belonging to the Bureau and they will be forwarded to Marshall at the first opportunity.
No man can live in Clarksville and run the Bureau with less than twenty five men. Ten or twelve would be an [[?]], and the Griffith Gang would demolish them in three days. For the ten days prior to my departure I went to my meals with my shooter in my hand and it cocked strong ruffians were riding about the streets shooting guns and pistols and cheering for Jeff Davis and Andy Johnson, and cursing me and daring me to come out. I am here worn out from exhaustion occasioned by constant anxiety both day and night.
