March 22nd 1868
about the first of October 1867, Four Soldiers galloped up to my house where I lay sick, and asked for Genl Rains I answered to the name, and they said Capt Horton wanted me at Dallas immediately. I told them I was sick and unable to ride. a Mr. Edy of Galveston City was present, he spoke promptly and told the soldiers I could not ride that distance, and that I must not go. but the soldiers said I had to go. Mr. Edy then said to me not to go, that it was a terrible outrage to drag a man off in this way. One of the Soldiers then arrested him but did not carry him off. I mounted a horse and started with them, but immediately commenced vomiting, and continued to do so at intervals during most of the way, the distance from my house to Dallas is Twenty-five miles where we arrived late in the night. Capt Horten upon being waked up said I have you at last have I. and then said can you give security for your appearance in the morning. I told him I could if it was daylight, but at that hour I did not know where to find anyone, it being about 2 o'clock. Then said he you must go to Jail, he came to the door where I stood and shook the Jail kees in my face, I told him I was very sick, but I feared not the severest punishment his cruelty could inflict, that I knew how to suffer as well as how to fight. He then asked the soldiers if they could fasten me well in a room, they said they could, then said he take him there, which they did, I remained there until the next day when I was escorted by a Soldier to his quarters, where I fell into a chair, for I could stand no longer. In his office stood a negro Girl one that I had owned and raised, Capt Horten said to me this girl says that your Son has struck her and that
