Lieut.
On the 14th Inst. I received information. that M. H. Goddin Esq" late. Sub. Asst Com"r", while proceeding to his home after being relieved from duty as S.A.C at this point, was violently assaulted by a party of four (4) armed men. and compelled to beg for his life_

I have just arrived here after making search for the criminals. with a small force mounted on seized horses_ but regret that they have eluded all my efforts and are now secreted in what is known as the "Big Thicket"

I fear, Lieut, it is almost useless for me with this small Infantry
