To Maj Gen'l J J Reynold 
Commanding Sub. Military District of Texas:

Your memorialists, William E Hart, and O P Boyd, citizens of Said County show that on the __ day of October 1867, They were brought before one S H Starr, Maj of 6th U S Cavalry and Commanding Military Post at Mount Pleasant Texas, on a charge of having forcibly compelled certain freedmen, to wit: Matthew Snowball, Joseph Briscoe, Susanah Flournoy and Paulina Briscoe, to quit the service of one W C Beal, of said county

The said Freedmen and the said Beal made oath before the said Commander that your memorialists forced said freedmen to abandon the service of said Beal.

Your memorialists state the truth to be that the said charge was and is wholly false, and that on the trial aforesaid, one John Corprew a freedman of the said County and State, upon oath stated, that said freedmen had told him they had left Beal on their own accord; and one Silva Smith, a freedwoman also swore, that said freedmen told her, that they had left the said Beal of their own choice; and one Major, a freedman also swore, that he heard the said freedmen in a conversation among themselves, say that they had left the said Beal of their own choice; and that one Huston Keith
