at the upper cabin. I went to the cabin to see what this noise meant. I called at the cabin "Jo Brisco and Matthew Snowball." Somebody answered they were not there. When I turned off to go home there was a pistol fired from the door of the cabin in the direction in which I was. My daughter with her child fled to the woods frightened by the shooting. I am afraid to attend to my professional calls on account of the threats of James, Boyd and Hart, and dont consider my life or property safe. I had in my employ four negroes viz: Matthew Snowball, Jo. Brisco, Susanna Flournoy, Lina Snowball; they were all under contract to work with me for 12 months - from 1st January 1867. They were abducted by Messrs. James, Boyd and Hart the latter part of January last."

Mat. Snowball called by Mr. Hart.
Question: "Have you repeatedly during the last year said that I did not force you off from Dr. Beale's?"
Answer: "No."
Question: "Did I make any threats the night I was at Dr. Beale's?"
Answer: "He said that we would be killed, burnt out, or run out of there before a month."
Question: "Did I tell you who was going to do it."
Answer: "He didn't tell me."

Jo. Brisco called by Mr. Hart.
Question: "Were you at my house two weeks before you left Dr. Beale's?"
Answer: "Yes."
