I have the honor to state that Maj. A.H. Mayer. Sub. Asst. Comr at this place has been in very bad health for the past five or six months, having been unable to attend to business the greater part of the time, - his health has steadily declined during the whole time, until his attending physicians expressed the opinion that he would not recover without a change of air, & ordered that for the recovery of his health, he be sent to Galveston. The friends of the Major accordingly put him aboard a steamer & sent him as recommended by his physicians.

Major Mayer requests me to ask you to send him a leave of absence until his is convalescent. 

He also requests me to state to you that he is in actual distress for the want of his pay accounts,
