Austin. }

Dear Sir.
Inclosed I send you my petition for an order requiring Mr. C. C. Millican of Wharton County to pay me the $250. the balance of the $500. awarded against him by Majr General Griffin for damages for his brutally whipping and abusing me in the Fall of 1865. without any just cause or provocation whatever. Mr. Millican made the first payment of $250. but the remaining payment of the same amount has not been paid.

Genl Griffin after hearing the case first required him to pay me $1000. but Mr. Millican went to Galveston and by pleading poverty induced him to reduce the amount to $500. and to give him until October to pay one half.

You will see from my petition to Genl Griffin that I was forced to dismiss my suit against Mr Millican for damages brought in the District Court of this County. because of the advantage he had over me in bringing prejudice against my case, and having no other alternative, but to submit to the wrong or to appeal to the military authorities for Justice.

Your immediate attention to this will greatly oblige me.

With the highest respect I am your obt servt.
Adalaide Spencer.
