James Johnson. freedman. being duly sworn, deposes and says: "I live about one fourth a mile from Dangerfield. I was in Dangerfield Sunday the 1st of March 1868 - yesterday. I was standing behind a grocery - Sergeant Pearson, the man that was killed, drove up to the hotel, had his horses put up and walked down town. He met the man English at the grocery who was about to get on his horse. Pearson told English to halt: he halted and Sergeant Pearson walked up to him and took hold of his gun and twisted it out of his hand. English said, with an oath, I will kill you, and immediately drew his pistol and shot the Sergeant, the ball entering his head just above his left eye; the Sergeant did not fall, and English immediately fired an other shot which struck him in the right brest; Sergeant Pearson then fell down dead. English then took the pistol from the belt of Sergeant Pearson and mounted his (English's) horse and rode off in a trot, saying "some more of you damed rascals better look out, I'll get some more of you before long." He said this to the black people. There were about twelve white men standing there and five colored men, including myself. No one tried to arrest English, or
