The State of Texas} Colorado County} Before me George Mitz a Justice of Peace in and for said county, came Elizabeth Hoffman who being duly sworn says that E. C. Powell, a transient person, on the morning of the 27th of June 1868, set on fire a small house used as a Barbershop, and the same with a number of other Houses burned to the ground thereby, it being in the town of Columbus, County & state aforesaid, and that the said E C Powell as deponent verily believes thereby wilfully burned the same. And deponent further says, that the morning of the burning (to wit) the 27th of June 1868. that the said E C Powell fraudulently, wrongfully and without the consent of her the deponent, took and carried away from and out of the possession of her, deponent, One hundred dollars in gold, with intent as deponent believes to deprive her deponent of the same. and appropriate the same to his own use and benefit said E C Powell.
