recognized. also Mr Wm Smith. saw him at his office. I came down spring street soon after supper. Went into Mr Smiths store on my way. Remained about 2 minutes. I then went down towards the river. I saw a woman standing in the door of a house near the river. Did not know her. I then went up the street by Mr Whootons Restaurant. Do not recollect of speaking to any one after leaving Mr Smiths. This was on friday night. I was awake after two oclock by my watch when the alarm of fire was raised. I had been up just before 2 oclock with my babe. When I awoke I heard a confusion. thought it a fight until I saw the light of the fire. I went immediately to the fire. saw several persons I knew. I went into Mr Folts store with others and helped to carry out the goods. The Barber shop was pretty well envelloped in fire when I arrived. saw a man go into Mr Folt's with an axe and commence knocking down the door. I was standing near the door when he commenced cutting it down. say five steps. I was on the side walk. He hit the door several licks before it opened. I knew Mr Jack Folts as an auctioneer. He has not sold much at auction lately. Have seen him take in a a little money at his sales. Did not see where the man who cut the store door got his axe
