foolish things - that they became restless discontented and unreliable. As time has passed away however they have gradually come to their senses and now as I said before complaints of idleness are rare.

As I have travelled through the country the almost universal response to my inquiries as to how the freedpeople were working has been, - "my freedpeople are doing as well as ever they did when slaves". The condition of the crops is such as to leave no doubt that good and faithful work has been done.
