reports referred to the general condition of affairs in the state so far as relates to lawlessness and crime and the same information is so constantly brought to the notice of the Asst. Comr. through various other sources that it seems like idle repetition to again report what has already become so notorious.

The same condition of affairs exists in Eastern Texas that is found in other portions of the state. Whether actually worse or better is a difficult question to decide and a matter of little moment inasmuch as all over the state crime exists to such a fearful extent that it is appalling to contemplate. There are I presume to day 5000 indictments in this state for homocide in its various degrees and the most of them are downright murders yet since the close of the war only one solitary case
