Dear Prof. Fenollosa:-

Your kind note of the 3rd inst. was duly received and I was glad to know of your comfortable and safe return journey to New York. It must have been pleasant to have had such genial company.

I trust that ere this you have, also, met Mr. Davis and had an opportunity to examine his collection.

Messers. Yamamoto and Minakuachi left Detroit a few days after your departure feeling, of course, very much disappointed. Minakuachi particularly so. But Yamamoto took a philosophical view of the situation, saying that in the future he would make sure of the absolute genuiness [[genuineness]] before leaving Japan of whatever objects he might import- surely a wise resolution.

There is little of news here expecting that contained in a cablegram from Ushikubo, dates October 6th, sent from Yokohoma [[Yokohama]] reading as follows:-

"Leave Minnesota with Zeppin"

I take it for granted that the message means that he was sailing from Yokohoma [[Yokohama]] that day on the S.S Minnesota, which is due to arrive in Seattle on October 21st, one week from next Saturday, and that he will probably reach New York some time during the week following. But whether or not he intends to stop in Detroit I know not. Neither do I understand the meaning of the word "Zeppin". However, I shall look it up in my Japanese dictionary this evening.

No additional word has come from Matsuki since the letter which I read to you when you were here
