and positively declined to become one of their directors. 

This ended the second conference of two hours, and then they called upon Harry Campbell and asked him to become your successor. He has just been in to discuss the matter with me. And he has practically decided that he will not accept. And I doubt, very much, if any man of self-respect will voluntarily become associated as a director in a concern which is dominated by two men as obstinate as both of them are. 

I shall be in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday of next week and hope to then have the pleasure of seeing you and explaining more fully the details of the conversations with Buhl and Whitney. I will then, also, hand you full particulars of the Smithsonian matter. 

Let me add, confidentially, that the President has invited me to visit him next week for the purpose of discussing the Smithsonian matter. But of this probably you are already advised.
