Dear Professor Fenollosa:-

I enclose herewith, a letter received a day or two ago from Mr. Dwight F. Davis of St. Louis, which is sent for your perusal and return.

Mr. Davis is a very intelligent young gentleman, belonging to an old distinguished family of St. Louis, Mo. He has been abroad about one year, during which time, he was married in Europe. While en route, he stopped off in Detroit with a letter of introduction from my friend, W. K. Bixby, He asked me to show him some of my Oriental collection, which I gladly did, and I found him interested in the finer things, and he then told me that he intended to make some purchases after he reached Japan.

His letter indicates that he held to his intention, and is now anxious to submit his purchases to your criticism. I have replied to his letter, giving him a letter of introduction to you saying that I have every reason to believe that you would cheerfully criticise his purchases, which, I trust, you can conveniently do.

Mr. Davis is a man of excellent social position, and I understand, is very wealthly. I believe you will enjoy making his acquaintance, and I hope that you will help him along in the good
