Palestine Anderson County Texas
April 22nd 1868.

O.O. Howard
Maj Genl Commissioner

Sir,
Inclosed I send You a letter which is addressed to W.H. Moore our District attorney, also the resolutions passed by the Democrat meeting held in this town. I desire You to show them to General Grant and others whom you may deem proper so to do. The charges against J A Wright is as false as hell, and as Black as the hearts of the Rebels that found it. it was framed in a body that was conceived in iniquity and bond in Sin, or they never would have rebelled. I do this in Order to show to Loyal men North and those in Authority the situation of Loyal men in a State where rebellion still remains and reigns supreme. And more particularly for this County where rebellion in all its forms of Vice, weakness, and Crimes, rules.

Our District Court is just over. our Judge was informed that did he allow freedmen (or in other words,) Colored people to set in the Jury Box that the Members of That Bar would cease to plead before a Colored Jury.

Our Grand Jury met.

found no bills of indictments against the Rebel whites for the most outragous Crimes against the Blacks, such as whipping to death, taking a pockett Knife and cutting ones throats, shooting, and other offences to numerous to mention. After being informed under Oath by the Agent at this place of said Offences.

They yet could find some twenty bills against the blacks for the most trifling offence, such as taking or using from their employer without his consent 1/2 pound of lard. 3 Peaches. & two
