Your Dispatch inquiring "How long will it be necessary for the Detachment to remain at Hempstead as a Commissioned Officer must be sent if it remains" is to hand this day. I answered that it was ordered to return to the Post this day - At the earnest solicitation of the Mayor of Hempstead & Sherf of Austin Co. I requested Lt. Green in command to detail a squad to remain until after the celebration of 4th July - also to aid the Civil authorities in making arrests and in disarming all persons coming into Town in accordance with an order issued I left this place on Thursday night to go by my home at Washington and intended being in Hempstead on Saturday 4th July myself, but a threatening disturbance growing out of the shooting of a Freedman by two white men prevented my so doing I have heard of no break of Law or Order at Hempstead though there still is much excitement in that Town. I have to report a very excited state of feeling here at
